Scripps Scientists to Develop ‘Swarms’
of Miniature Robotic Ocean Explorers
Drifters designed to fill in gaps of ocean knowledge,
contribute to areas ranging from marine protected areas to harmful algal
blooms
Jules Jaffe and Peter Franks of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC
San Diego have been awarded nearly $1 million from the National Science
Foundation to develop swarms of autonomous underwater explorers (AUEs),
new ocean-probing instruments that will trace fine details of
fundamental oceanographic processes.
